US Surgeons Successfully Conduct First-Ever Whole Eye Transplant.

US Surgeons Successfully Conduct First-Ever Whole Eye Transplant A surgical team in New York revealed on Thursday that they accomplished the world’s inaugural transplantation of an entire eye, marking a significant medical advancement.

The procedure involved removing part of a donor’s face and the complete left eye, which was then grafted onto a line worker from Arkansas, Aaron James. He had endured a severe electric shock in June 2021, resulting in substantial injuries, including the loss of his left eye, left arm above the elbow, nose, lips, front teeth, left cheek area, and chin.

Referred to NYU Langone Health, a renowned center for facial transplants, James underwent the groundbreaking surgery on May 27. This historic achievement, which utilized 3D cutting guides for precise bone placement, represents the first instance of transplanting an entire eye in a living person. Eduardo Rodriguez, leading the 21-hour surgery, emphasized James’s role as a pioneering patient, expressing gratitude for his willingness to undergo the highly risky procedure for the benefit of others facing similar challenges. While the transplanted left eye exhibits signs of good health, including a robust blood supply, stable pressure, and generated electrical signals, James has not regained his sight. Retinal ophthalmologist Vaidehi Dedania remains optimistic, stating, “But we have a lot of hope.”Credit : AFP
