The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed frustration over the failure of former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, to present himself for trial in court despite being accused of N80.2bn fraud.
Speaking during a visit to the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the EFCC’s acting Zonal Director, Benin Zonal Command, Mr. Effa Okim, stated that Bello’s actions have ridiculed the Nigerian justice system.
Okim lamented that Bello has been shielded by the system, making it difficult for the EFCC to arrest him despite being declared wanted. He questioned why Bello’s colleagues and associates have not advised him to report to the EFCC, adding that the situation has damaged Nigeria’s image.
The EFCC has been seeking to arrest Bello for months, but he has repeatedly failed to appear in court for his arraignment. The commission has placed him on a watchlist, but Okim expressed frustration that Bello is still being protected by the system.
Okim urged the media to criticize Bello’s actions and call on him to report to the EFCC, emphasizing that the criminal justice system has been ridiculed by his behavior. He assured that the EFCC will continue to pursue the case through legal means, despite the challenges.
