The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, over alleged involvement in a N2.5 billion pension fraud. According to sources, Kwankwaso was invited and questioned by EFCC interrogators regarding the matter.
The investigation is connected to a previous case where the EFCC recovered 324 houses worth N4.1 billion from two successive administrations in Kano State, which had been denied to pensioners. The houses were built using pension funds contributed by the pensioners, but were fraudulently sold to cronies and associates of the former governors.
Kwankwaso’s probe comes amid political tensions between his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party, and the All Progressives Congress led by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The Kano State Assembly recently reversed Ganduje’s decision to split the Kano emirate into five, and restored Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, who was dethroned by Ganduje in 2020.
The EFCC’s investigation is ongoing, and the commission has declined to comment on the matter. However, sources indicate that Kwankwaso has provided some details to interrogators and the probe is continuing.
