Black Christmas In Plateau As Gunmen Kill 72

As most Nigerians anticipated the joy of Christmas Day, a tragic event unfolded on Sunday as assailants invaded various communities in two local governments of Plateau State, leaving 72 people dead.

Despite the military’s response to 36 distress calls in the past 48 hours, their efforts proved futile in preventing the bloodshed perpetrated by the attackers.

The Berom Youth Movement (BYM) strongly condemned the horrifying invasion of five communities by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Gashish and Ropp Districts of Barkin Ladi and Bokkos local government areas on Christmas Eve. BYM reported coordinated attacks resulting in the death of over 72 individuals and the destruction of property worth millions of naira.

In a statement issued by its national publicity secretary, Rwang Tengwong, BYM outlined the specific casualties, highlighting the highest death toll in Bokkos. The attacks not only claimed lives but also led to the displacement of residents and the looting of food items.

The BYM statement expressed dismay, stating, “On a day meant to celebrate love, compassion, and togetherness, the perpetrators of this dastardly act have brought untold agony, suffering, and grief to the affected communities in Bokkos and Mangu local government areas.

“The BYM extended condolences to the families of the victims and affirmed solidarity with the affected communities, vowing to advocate for justice and accountability.Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang responded by ordering the arrest of the killers, emphasizing the need for them to face justice. He urged the public to remain calm, report any suspicious activities to security agencies, and promised stringent measures to address insecurity.

The governor’s announcement followed the confirmation of the incident during a luncheon organized by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, where Mutfwang disclosed that at least 50 people were killed in the attacks.

Maj.-Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar, the commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), reported the military’s response to 36 distress calls and reiterated their commitment to halting criminal activities in Plateau State.Credit Leadership Newspaper
