Japanese Police arrests driver for killing pigeon
A Tokyo taxi driver, Atsushi Ozawa, aged 50, was arrested on Sunday for deliberately driving into a flock of pigeons, killing one last month. The police reported on Tuesday that Ozawa violated wildlife protection laws by using his car to kill a common pigeon, not a game animal, in the Japanese capital.
The incident occurred when Ozawa sped off from a green traffic light, plowing his taxi into the birds at a speed of 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour. A surprised passer-by reported the incident after hearing the engine.
Following the arrest, Tokyo police had a veterinarian conduct a post-mortem on the pigeon, determining its cause of death as traumatic shock.
Ozawa defended his actions, stating, “Roads belong to humans, so pigeons should have dodged out of the way,” according to local media. The police deemed his behavior “highly malicious” for a professional driver, leading to the decision to make the arrest.
Some reactions on social media questioned the severity of the arrest for running over a pigeon, suggesting alternatives like honking the car horn instead of intentionally causing harm.
