Rivers Assembly Ablaze Amid Alleged Move to Impeach Gov FubaraThe Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) was set ablaze on Sunday night by unidentified political thugs. This was due to the alleged attempt to impeach the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the House Leader, Edison Ehie.At the same time, a civil society group called the Coalition of Democratic Vanguard (CDV) issued a stern warning to Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and his associates.
They were accused of seeking to impeach Fubara and Ehie.Reports indicate that some thugs in a white Hilux van invaded the assembly complex around 9:00 pm yesterday. They disarmed the security personnel on duty and carried out the attack.The incident took place at the assembly complex, located opposite the State Command Police Headquarters on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.Sources revealed that the legislature had plans to impeach Fubara and Ehie on the day they resumed their sitting, following undisclosed issues.An anonymous security source confirmed the incident and mentioned that it required the efforts of the police and the State Fire Service teams to extinguish the fire.
They said, “Yes, the Rivers State House of Assembly main chamber was under attack and set on fire. It was police officers and the fire service team that helped extinguish the fire.”As of the time of this report, more than 17 security trucks and four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) with over 50 federal security personnel had been stationed at the facility.The connection between this incident and the rumored rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the FCT Minister, remains unclear.
There were also allegations that the Rivers Government House Aide De Camp had been dismissed.Meanwhile, CDV had previously issued a statement warning Nyesom Wike and his allies against attempting to impeach Governor Fubara and Ehie. The coalition emphasized the importance of adhering to democratic principles and respecting the people’s mandate.Fubara, a former Accountant General of the state, was chosen by Wike to be the governor. According to a source in the state, Wike frequently gives directives and instructions to the governor, something that has caused friction between them.
Attempts by Fubara to resist Wike and assert himself have allegedly led to a strained relationship, with the minister supposedly plotting to instigate the state House of Assembly to impeach the governor.
