The Federal Government has announced plans to invest $2 billion in a 90,000km fibre-optic project to expand Nigeria’s fibre optic cable capacity from 35,000km to 125,000km.
According to the Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, the project aims to provide meaningful connectivity to communities, enabling schools, hospitals, government establishments, and businesses to thrive in a digitally connected environment.
The investment is expected to accelerate growth across critical sectors, including education, health, and agriculture. The ministry is also committed to deepening Nigeria’s digital backbone through the National Broadband Alliance and collaboration with state governments.
Additionally, the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme aims to equip three million Nigerians with digital and technical skills, addressing the growing shortage of skilled digital professionals.
The minister noted that Nigeria’s youthful population is uniquely positioned to fill this gap and become a net exporter of technology talent.
