Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo sociopolitical organization, has praised the decision to name a road in Abuja after the celebrated author, Prof. Chinua Achebe.
While commending the Federal Government for the honor, the group’s Vice-President, Chief Vincent Afam, expressed disappointment that the issues Achebe fought against, including bad governance, corruption, and oppression, remain unaddressed 11 years after his passing.
Afam noted that Achebe’s legacy deserves recognition, but the current state of the country is worrisome.
He questioned whether Achebe would have accepted the recognition given the country’s current state, recalling that Achebe had previously rejected a national honor due to similar concerns.
The group urged the Federal Government to focus on meaningful development rather than mere honors, addressing the pressing issues plaguing the nation.
