Benedict Akika, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, has been released by his kidnappers. Akika was abducted from his residence in Idi Ape, Olorunda-Aba, Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State on September 4, 2024.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed Akika’s release on Wednesday, stating that he was freed after an intensive manhunt and search by the command’s tactical intelligence team. The police also stated that Akika is undergoing medical examination before being reunited with his family.
The kidnappers, wearing face masks, had stormed Akika’s home and abducted him. The police launched a search and rescue mission, combing adjoining forests across three states, and eventually secured Akika’s release.
The Oyo State Police Command has appealed to residents to assist in the ongoing investigation by providing timely and credible information to the police. The command has also reaffirmed its resolve to ensure that Oyo State is not turned into a playground for criminal activities.
Akika is a key ally of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. His kidnapping and release have generated widespread attention and concern.
