The University of Ibadan has issued a query to two students, Olamide Iyanuoluwa and Aduwo Ayodele, for their involvement in a recent protest against fee hikes on campus. The students were accused of disrupting the inauguration of the Students’ Union administration and given 48 hours to respond, failing which may result in suspension.
According to a memo signed by the Deputy Registrar (Students), T.I Musa, the students were accused of gross misconduct and unruly behavior during the protest, which was deemed disrespectful to the Vice-Chancellor and other university officials. The memo stated that the students carried placards with “scandalous inscriptions” against school fee increments.
The students were given 48 hours to respond to the query, providing supporting documents if available, and state why disciplinary action should not be taken against them. Failure to respond within the stipulated time or providing false information may result in automatic suspension of their studentship.
The query follows a report by the Student Affairs Division, which alleged that the students disrupted the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Students’ Union executives on May 13, 2024. The university management has taken a firm stance against the protest, deeming it an act of gross misconduct.
