Tensions are running high in Rivers State as protesters stormed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt on Thursday. The unrest comes ahead of the Local Government election scheduled for October 5, 2024.
The protesters, in large numbers, forced security operatives to intervene and manage traffic congestion. The delay in releasing the 2023 Voters’ Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) sparked the protests.
Despite a court ruling barring INEC from releasing the voters’ register, Governor Siminalayi Fubara insists the election will proceed as planned, citing a Supreme Court ruling mandating democratically elected local government executives in all states.
