The Abia State Government has announced its commitment to utilizing renewable energy sources to provide access to electricity for all citizens. This move is aimed at creating a sustainable power supply and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
According to the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, the state is on track to provide international standard electricity. The government has engaged stakeholders, including personnel from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, to develop a regulation framework for off-grid energy.
The Commissioner emphasized that the Electricity Act of 2023 has given states the leverage to regulate their electricity, and Abia is working towards developing its electricity law. The state has also received financing from the International Solar Alliance to support its off-grid energy initiatives.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Kachi Etuluo, highlighted that Abia aims to be amongst the states that have developed their upgraded energy sector. The state has engaged facilitators from India and Germany to educate stakeholders on off-grid energy regulation.
