LABOUR PARTY CHAIRMAN JULIUS ABURE
Supreme court ruling:Legislature and judiciary is under siege says LP chairman
“The party’s chairman, Julius Abure, expressed his belief that the executive has taken control of both the judiciary and the legislature. The National Chairman of the Party, Julius Abure, made this statement.
The Labour Party (LP) claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has hijacked the legislative and judicial branches of government. This claim followed the Supreme Court’s judgment on Thursday, which affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s electoral victory.
After the apex court dismissed the appeals of the presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, Julius Abure, LP’s Chairman, held a press briefing. He expressed the party’s disappointment but stated their determination to remain optimistic about the nation’s future.
Justice John Iyang Okoro, leading a seven-judge panel, ruled against the opposition’s appeals, citing lack of merit. The Supreme Court upheld the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal’s ruling on September 6, 2023, affirming APC’s Tinubu as the winner.
Julius Abure remarked that the events from the 2023 presidential election to the present indicate a slide toward dictatorship. He expressed shock at the court’s alignment with the previous judgment despite flaws in the Presidential Election Appeal Tribunal’s decision.
The party acknowledged the need to move forward despite disappointment, emphasizing their commitment to an optimistic outlook for the nation. They mourned the inability of institutions to defend democracy and the people’s voices.
Abure contended that the executive had taken control of both the judiciary and the legislature, marking it as unfortunate for Nigeria’s democracy and its citizens. He referred to the sacrifices of the nation’s founders and their fight for independence.
Abure also alleged that some party leaders, including himself and Obi, were targeted by the government for vilification to suppress the party’s goals for a new Nigeria. He called on the international community to defend democracy in Nigeria, referring to their condemnation of the presidential election outcome.
He urged Nigerians not to lose hope, stating that a new Nigeria remains possible with determination and will.”
