Resident doctors give Enugu governor 14 days ultimatum

The Association of Resident Doctors in Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) has given the government of Enugu State a 14-day ultimatum. The ultimatum demands the immediate employment of more doctors and enhanced security for healthcare workers.

The communique, issued at the end of an emergency General Meeting in ESUT Teaching Hospital, was jointly signed by the President, Dr. Chukwunonso Ofonere, and Secretary General, Dr. Ikemefuna Nnamani.

The statement urges ESUTH management and the Enugu State Government to declare a state of emergency on doctor employment. The EGM observed that despite a promise 120 days ago, there has been no advertisement for the employment of medical officers and resident doctors.

The statement also mentions the management’s plan to improve safety for doctors and health workers. The EGM has extended the initial 14-day ultimatum to another 14 days, ending on December 1.

The statement emphasizes the need for urgent approval to recruit medical officers, resident doctors, and house officers, particularly in key departments like Accident and Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology.
