Nigeria Labour Congress: Peter Obi Unlikely to Support Julius Abure’s Continued Leadership
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed doubt that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, will support Julius Abure’s continued tenure as national chairman. According to Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, Obi’s visit to the Labour Party secretariat was a reconciliatory gesture, not an endorsement of Abure’s contested re-election.
The NLC has refuted claims of resolving its differences with the party leadership, and tension persists between the party leadership and Obi’s supporters. Obi’s camp has denied endorsing Abure’s re-election, and Ndubuaku believes that Obi wants to promote peace and righteousness within the party.
The NLC is seeking reforms within the party, and Ndubuaku suggests that Obi’s potential meeting will be between the genuine party owners and “transactional hijackers.” This move aims to reposition the party and its structure.
