British actor Idris Elba has announced plans to relocate to Africa within the next decade to support the continent’s growing film industry. Elba, known for his roles in “Long Walk to Freedom” and “Beasts of No Nation,” aims to establish film studios in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Accra, Ghana.
Elba emphasized the importance of Africans telling their own stories on the global stage. “I would certainly consider settling down here; not even consider, it’s going to happen,” he said. “I think [I’ll move] in the next five, 10 years, God willing.”
The actor, born to a Ghanaian mother and Sierra Leonean father, plans to live in various African cities, including Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar, to immerse himself in local storytelling. Elba believes the film industry serves as a “soft power” to reshape global perceptions of Africa.
He highlighted the need to invest in African storytelling, saying, “When you see me, you see a little version of yourself, and that encourages us.” Elba’s vision includes shooting films in his Accra studio, showcasing locally produced stories.
Elba’s commitment to African cinema includes portraying Okonkwo in the upcoming TV series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart.”
