Ex Guinea military leader breaks out of prison

Early on Saturday, heavily armed individuals in Conakry released Moussa Camara, the former leader of Guinea’s 2008 military junta, along with three other high-ranking officers, according to Justice Minister Charles Wright. Reports from residents indicated the presence of military vehicles and special forces in the streets of Conakry following gunfire in the Kaloum administrative district, where Camara and others were being held in the Central House prison.

Justice Minister Charles Wright stated, “Around 0500 (0500 GMT), heavily armed individuals entered the Central House of Conakry and successfully extracted four defendants, including Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, who were on trial for the events of Sept. 28.” He refrained from providing further details about the ongoing investigation.

Guinea’s borders have been sealed to prevent the escape of the detainees. Camara and others have been facing trial since the previous year, accused of orchestrating a stadium massacre and mass rape by Guinean security forces during a pro-democracy rally on Sept. 28, 2009, resulting in the deaths of 150 people.
