The Lagos State Government has justified the increase in boarding fees in its model colleges, citing the need to ensure better welfare for students. The new fee, N100,000 per session, is a significant increase from the previous N35,000.
According to the state’s Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the old fee was unrealistic in 2024. The ministry noted that students in boarding schools account for only 1% of the state’s public school population.
The government argued that the increased fee will cover essential costs such as feeding, janitorial services, and energy expenses. The ministry emphasized that nutritious food is crucial for students’ physical growth and mental alertness.
Parents protested the outrageous fee hike. However, the government urged them to understand the necessity of the increase, ensuring the health and well-being of students.
