Edo Police Detain Cop For Slapping Lady In Viral Video
The Edo State Police Command has taken action following a viral video depicting a police officer assaulting a woman. The officer in question, identified as Sgt. Samuel Imakor, has been arrested and detained for the incident involving Mercy Ajayi at a police station.
According to a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, on Monday, the police are actively addressing the situation. The statement acknowledged the circulating video showing a young woman being slapped by a policeman at the police station.
In the statement, it was confirmed that the officer responsible for the assault is Police Sergeant F/NO. 505450, Sgt. Samuel Imakor, who is attached to Iruekpen Police Station in Edo State. Following his arrest, Sgt. Imakor was brought before the Commissioner of Police for debriefing on Monday, February 11, 2024, by his Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
During the debriefing, Sgt. Imakor confessed to the Commissioner of Police that he did indeed slap the young woman, Mercy Ajayi. However, he attempted to justify his actions by alleging that Ajayi had slapped him while they were in the vehicle during her arrest. He further claimed that Ajayi was apprehended in connection with the theft of human hair from a hotel department.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about police brutality and the treatment of individuals in police custody. The Edo State Police Command’s swift response to the situation demonstrates a commitment to accountability and addressing misconduct within its ranks.
The case is under investigation, and the authorities have assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against Sgt. Samuel Imakor if found guilty. As the investigation unfolds, many are calling for justice for Mercy Ajayi and accountability for the actions of law enforcement officers.
