Nigerians have expressed disappointment and frustration over the recent increase in passport fees announced by the Nigeria Immigration Service. The new fees, which take effect on September 1, 2024, will see the cost of a 32-page passport booklet with five-year validity increase to N50,000, while a 64-page passport booklet with 10-year validity will cost N100,000.
Many have taken to social media to express their discontent, citing corruption, economic hardship, and insensitivity on the part of the government. Some have pointed out that the increased fees will only lead to more corruption, as officials may demand extra payments to facilitate the process.
Others have criticized the government for implementing the new fees without considering the economic realities faced by Nigerians. The increase in passport fees comes at a time when the country is experiencing high inflation and a minimum wage of N70,000.
