The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Benin, rejecting the outcome of the September 21 governorship election. The electoral body declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner with 291,667 votes, defeating PDP’s Asue Ighodalo who polled 247,274 votes.
PDP leaders and members carried banners and chanted slogans, calling for INEC to declare Ighodalo the winner. They alleged that the election results were manipulated.
The APC responded, with its Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, saying that no amount of protest could change the election outcome. He advised the PDP to approach the tribunal with evidence.
The PDP chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, vowed to reclaim the mandate, stating that they would present overwhelming evidence to the tribunal.
