Kenya’s Deputy President faces impeachment vote

Kenya’s Senate is set to vote on whether to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office. The impeachment trial follows a historic vote in the National Assembly, where 282 MPs voted to impeach Gachagua on 11 charges, including corruption and insubordination.

Gachagua denies all charges and has called the allegations “nonsensical.” If the Senate approves his impeachment, he will be the first deputy president to be ousted since Kenya’s 2010 constitution introduced impeachment.

The outcome is uncertain, but Gachagua’s chances of survival are slim. Possible successors include Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki and Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi.
