The World Health Organization (WHO) has authorized Gavi and UNICEF to procure vaccines for mpox prevention, pending the Emergency Use Listing (EUL) decision. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus emphasized that vaccines are a crucial tool, but not the only one, in stopping outbreaks and saving lives.
For years, WHO has supported affected countries in Africa in responding to sporadic mpox outbreaks. The organization has been calling for more research, development of diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines for mpox. Dr. Ghebreyesus highlighted the importance of a coordinated response, mentioning the establishment of the Africa CDC and the organization’s work with local partners and civil society.
WHO aims to stop human-to-human transmission and bring outbreaks under control. The organization expects to issue an EUL for vaccines within three weeks. Additionally, WHO is providing support for laboratories, health workers, and affected communities.
Dr. Ghebreyesus stressed that the mpox outbreak is a reminder of the need for a legally binding international agreement to ensure a coordinated and equitable response to pandemics.
