Nurses Protest New Certificate Verification Guidelines in Abuja

Nurses under the aegis of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Abuja chapter, have taken to the streets to protest against the new verification certification guidelines recently released by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).The protest, which unfolded on Monday, February 12, outside the NMCN’s office in Abuja, was fueled by the perception among nurses that the new guidelines could impede their freedom to pursue career opportunities.

Nurses participating in the protest demanded that the council address various issues affecting their profession, including concerns about welfare, salary scale, staff shortages, and other rights.

The uproar among nurses follows the issuance of a circular by the NMCN on February 7, wherein the council revised the guidelines for requesting verification of certificates for nurses and midwives.During the protest, footage captured the nurses and midwives chanting slogans and brandishing placards in a peaceful demonstration.

Some of the placards bore inscriptions such as “No to the new verification laws,” “Justice 4 nurses,” “Eradicate quackery,” and “NMCN, don’t reduce nurses.”The demonstration reflects a growing discontent within the nursing community regarding the perceived implications of the new certification verification guidelines.

Nurses fear that these regulations could potentially hinder their professional mobility and limit their ability to access job opportunities. In light of the protest, stakeholders are urging the NMCN to engage with nurses and address their grievances constructively.

The nursing profession plays a vital role in the healthcare system, and ensuring that nurses feel supported and empowered is crucial for the delivery of quality healthcare services across Nigeria. The NMCN is yet to respond to the protest or provide any official statement regarding the concerns raised by nurses.

However, the demonstration serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of dialogue and collaboration between regulatory bodies and healthcare professionals to foster a conducive working environment and uphold standards of excellence in nursing practice.
