According to reports, a Nigerian Army soldier serving with the 35 Artillery Brigade in Alamala, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Boyi ThankGod, shot himself in the head and passed away.
According to a different source, the deceased soldier displayed depressive symptoms and had voiced grievances regarding his underpaid allowances prior to taking his own life on Monday.
On Monday, the day Nigeria observed Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the soldier committed suicide while performing standby duty, according to an Army source who begged to remain anonymous.
According to the source, the incident occurred on Monday, January 15, and an inquiry is underway to determine the soldier’s motivation for taking his own life.
“A young soldier identified as Boyi Thankgod committed suicide on Monday, making the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration a very unpleasant and sorrowful day for the 35 Artillery brigade,” he stated.
“He was detailed for barracks standby duty at the brigade headquarters and attached to headquarters 35 Artillery brigade Abeokuta, Ogun State.”
“He committed suicide as a result of melancholy and low system morale.”
“His friends said he had already expressed disinterest in the army job and had complained about low morale and corruption in the military.”
“We are merely awaiting the conclusion of the investigation by the military police officers to ascertain the cause of the incident,” he stated.
Mohammed Goni, the brigade’s spokesperson, was unable for comment at the time of publication.
