The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and the National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees (NUPTE) have threatened to shut down the national grid and telecom services at midnight on Wednesday if the Nigeria Police Force arrests the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.
The threat comes after the police summoned Ajaero for questioning on Tuesday over alleged links to terrorism financing and other allegations.
Ajaero, however, turned down the invitation, citing late notification, but agreed to honor the summons on Wednesday, August 29.
In a notice to members, NUEE General Secretary Dominic Igwebike stated, “That upon any arrest of the NLC President or any other Labour Leader, all workers are to down tools from 12 midnight of 21 August 2024.”
NUPTE General Secretary Mary Nwosu echoed this stance, directing workers in the postal and telecoms sector to follow suit.
The NLC, after a meeting on Tuesday, also vowed to embark on a nationwide strike if Ajaero is arrested.
