In a significant crackdown on illegal crude oil bunkering, operatives of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) successfully thwarted an attack by suspected oil theft barons in Ilaje community, along the Trans-Forcados Western corridor in Ondo State. This operation came just hours after a call for increased vigilance against oil theft.
The attack on TSSNL’s team occurred on Sunday night, prompting a swift response from security forces. Mobilizing upon receiving intelligence, the joint team stormed Awoye community, where the illegal activities were reportedly centered.
During the operation, a large store built by the oil thieves along the Alowe sea shore in Ilaje Local Government Area was destroyed by the security operatives. Despite the suspects managing to flee with their speed boats, the intervention was deemed successful in disrupting their operations.
Captain Warredi Enisuoh, Executive Director of Operations and Technical Services at Tantita, issued a statement acknowledging the collaborative effort between TSSNL and NSCDC in executing the operation. The statement, released in Warri, Delta State, detailed the events and emphasized the importance of such interventions in combating economic sabotage.
The Tantita Commandant in Ondo State, Chief Idowu Asonja, led the surveillance patrol, which resulted in the discovery and destruction of a significant amount of illicit crude oil. A total of 700 kegs filled with crude oil, equivalent to 21,000 liters, were found and subsequently set ablaze. Additionally, two wooden boats used for transporting the stolen oil were destroyed.
Chief Idowu Asonja issued a stern warning to the community members, urging them to refrain from engaging in activities detrimental to the nation’s economy. He emphasized the government’s commitment to development and employment opportunities for the youth, urging residents to support efforts to curb illegal activities.
The successful operation serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between security agencies and private firms in tackling oil theft and safeguarding national resources. Chief Asonja’s message underscores the importance of community cooperation in combating illicit activities and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
