On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, Abia State took a historic step toward economic progress with the groundbreaking ceremony of the Abia International Airport at the Community School Ubaha Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North. This event, led by Governor Alex Otti alongside the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, marks a significant milestone for the Southeast region’s development.
Originally conceived as a modest federal airstrip project, the initiative evolved into a full-scale airport under the visionary leadership of Governor Otti. His administration successfully collaborated with federal authorities to enhance the project’s scope, securing support from key aviation agencies such as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). Additionally, private sector partners, including Access Bank, have pledged their involvement, ensuring the project’s financial sustainability and transformative potential.
Strategically located between Aba and Umuahia, the Abia International Airport is set to become a hub for trade, tourism, and investment. Its construction includes a state-of-the-art runway to meet international standards, making it capable of accommodating larger aircraft and improving connectivity within and beyond Nigeria.
The project’s relocation from its original site to Nsulu was a pragmatic decision by the administration. The initial site’s heavy development posed challenges, including extensive demolition and compensation requirements. By choosing Nsulu, the state avoided these obstacles while ensuring room for future expansion and improved accessibility.
Community engagement played a pivotal role in the project’s success. Although some initial resistance arose from locals concerned about the impact on their livelihoods, Governor Otti’s administration addressed these fears through transparent dialogue. The Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, and Special Adviser on Lands and Housing, Pastor Okorugo Aji, spearheaded efforts to build trust. They assured residents of adequate compensation and prioritized their inclusion in project activities.
The government also adjusted the project’s land allocation, reducing it from 1,880 to 1,300 hectares to address community concerns. Local youths were actively involved in preparatory work, fostering a sense of ownership and minimizing environmental disruption. Communities such as Ubaha, Umuala, Ikputu, and Umuomainta Nbawsi have since embraced the initiative, recognizing its potential to improve livelihoods and drive development.
Beyond the airport, the project includes complementary infrastructure such as an Airforce base, a five-star hotel, upgraded roads, and improved drainage systems. These investments are expected to create thousands of jobs, support local businesses, and attract industries to Abia State. The airport will also enhance tourism and foster the development of hospitality and cultural heritage sites.
This groundbreaking achievement underscores the resilience and vision of Governor Otti’s administration. The Abia International Airport stands as a symbol of hope, progress, and the transformative power of strategic leadership.
