Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, met with Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, and other opposition leaders in Abuja.
The meeting sparked speculation about a potential coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi and Atiku, who ran on the PDP ticket in 2019, discussed the possibility of working together to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, confirmed the meeting and suggested that coalition discussions were underway. Timothy Osadolor, the PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader, welcomed the meeting, saying it was long overdue. He expressed hope that the opposition leaders would work together to defeat the APC in 2027.

Yunusa Tanko, the Chief Spokesman of Obi’s Presidential Campaign Organisation, described the meeting as a discussion among like-minded individuals seeking better leadership for Nigeria. He emphasized that the meeting was just the beginning of exploratory talks, and no conclusions had been reached.
The APC dismissed the meeting, saying it was not intimidated by the potential merger. Bala Ibrahim, the APC’s National Publicity Director, stated that the party was focused on strengthening its support base and would not lose sleep over the opposition’s plans.
Political analysts Inibehe Effiong and Professor Hassan Saliu expressed skepticism about the alliance’s chances of success, citing the deep divisions between Obi and Atiku’s supporters. They also noted that the PDP’s contribution to Nigeria’s problems could make it difficult for citizens to support the alliance.
