Residents of Kano have praised the peaceful atmosphere that prevailed during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in the city, despite the ongoing emirate crisis. The police command also expressed satisfaction with the orderly conduct of Sallah prayers across the state.
Commissioner of Police, Hussaini Gumel, lauded residents for their peaceful conduct at various prayer grounds, both within and outside the Kano metropolis. Reports from all 44 local government areas indicated that the festivities were celebrated without incident.
Fears had been raised that the emirship tussle might mar the celebrations, but the police command’s ban on the Kano Durbar and the decision to have contending emirs pray at different mosques helped maintain peace. Emir Muhammad Sanusi prayed at Sheikh Tijjani Mosque, while deposed Emir Ado Bayero prayed at Nassarawa Mosque.
Sanusi emphasized the importance of following Prophet Muhammad’s teachings, which stress helping the needy, during his sermon. Residents expressed happiness that the celebration was incident-free and commended the police and security agencies for ensuring peace.
Some residents called for continued security presence beyond the Sallah celebrations and urged support for security efforts by providing information on suspicious individuals. A youth group, the Arewa Youth Advancement Forum, also urged Emir Bayero to forgive his enemies and commended his commitment to the state’s progress and development.
