The Federal Government has initiated the process of reconstituting the governing councils of universities, with the Education Minister setting up a panel to finalize the list. The councils will be inaugurated once the list is complete.
National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, made this known during a media parley with education reporters in Abuja. He was responding to the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) two-week ultimatum to reconstitute the governing councils of federal universities.
Maiyaki emphasized that reconstituting the councils of 61 universities is a significant task, requiring careful selection of qualified individuals to deliver on the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He urged ASUU to be patient with the government during this period.

The NUC is committed to expanding access to higher education, as the current 272 universities are insufficient to meet the growing demand for university education from Nigerian youth. To address this, the commission has identified strategic priorities, including curriculum development, quality assurance, research, and innovation.
Initiatives include encouraging industry partnerships, promoting blended learning, and developing guidelines for transnational education, e-learning, and open educational resources.
The commission has also produced guidelines for the establishment of private open universities in Nigeria, aimed at making Nigerian graduates competitive globally and reducing the need for foreign university education.
