The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government for buying a new presidential jet worth $100 million without National Assembly approval. The parties described the action as insensitive, especially when Nigerians are facing economic hardship.
The PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, and LP campaign spokesman, Yunusa Tanko, expressed their disapproval, stating that the government’s priorities are misplaced. They emphasized that the purchase of the jet is a luxury that Nigerians cannot afford, and that the government should focus on addressing the country’s economic challenges.
The new presidential jet, an Airbus A330 business jet, was purchased last month and has already been used by President Tinubu for a working visit to France. The Presidency has defended the purchase, stating that it is necessary for the President’s safety and convenience. However, opposition parties and some civil society organizations have condemned the move, arguing that it is an unnecessary expense and a violation of constitutional procedures.
The controversy surrounding the purchase of the presidential jet has sparked debate about the government’s priorities and its handling of public funds. While the Presidency maintains that the purchase is justified, opposition parties and critics continue to express their disapproval, calling for greater transparency and accountability in government spending.
