Nigerian Striker Boniface Set for March Return

Victor Boniface, the prolific Nigerian striker for Bayer Leverkusen, has been sidelined with an adductor injury since January. However, ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s upcoming clash against Qarabag, manager Xabi Alonso has provided an encouraging update on Boniface’s fitness.

Alonso expressed optimism that Boniface, who has been the club’s top scorer this season, is on track for a return at the end of March. This would potentially make him available for selection in the Bundesliga fixture against Hoffenheim on March 30, the game immediately following the international break.

Despite his injury setback, the 22-year-old has shown promising signs by resuming running duties last week and is reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery process. There is even speculation that he could make his comeback earlier, possibly featuring against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the DFB Pokal on April 3.

Throughout the season, Boniface has been instrumental for Bayer Leverkusen, contributing to 24 goals (16 goals and eight assists) in 23 appearances across all competitions. His impact has been particularly notable considering he made his debut in the German league this season and quickly established himself as a key player.

Boniface sustained his injury during the build-up to the Africa Cup of Nations, but his absence has not dented Leverkusen’s performance significantly. Under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen has maintained an impressive unbeaten record this season, currently sitting 10 points clear of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings.

Furthermore, Leverkusen’s successful campaign extends beyond domestic competition. They are set to face Qarabag in the upcoming match, are progressing to the DFB Pokal semi-finals, and are poised for a potential treble this season. With Boniface’s imminent return, Leverkusen’s prospects for further success appear promising as they continue their pursuit of silverware under Xabi Alonso’s leadership.
